I will be leading an artist salon and panel discussion on November 16th in New York City.  The topic of this event will be creative humanitarianism. The gathering will be held at Affirmation Arts in tandem with their acclaimed exhibit, Saving Grace: A Celebration of Haitian Art. The invitation-only salon brings together 15 nationally and internationally-recognized artists with 6 experts from within art, philanthopy, law, spirituality, cultural diplomacy, and the academy to examine how the liminal status of art and artists  presents a potential for alternative, 'creatively disruptive', and most importantly, generative, political discourse. I am most grateful for the support of Affirmation Arts and International Arts Movement who are co-hosting the event, and for Makoto Fujimura who will be moderating the panel discussion, 'Looking forward: Imagining a creative humanitarianism for this generation of artists'. For further information on future salons and gatherings, please contact me directly through this website.

Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta (SCAD) Presents “Entwined” by William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez.

ATLANTA, Ga.—The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Entwined,” an exhibition showcasing the recent collaboration between artists William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez. “Entwined” presents large-scale photographs depicting choreographed, overlapping bodies that emerge and dissolve in stark silhouettes. Both corporal and cerebral, the imagery evokes the connections between the physical and the psychological. Also entwined is the unique combination of traditional and digital photographic processes used in this innovative body of work.

In a recent catalogue for the Hillman + Chavez collaboration, renowned writer and curator Gary Sangster wrote, “The work of William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez – a first time partnership in creative photography from two artists, one located in New York and the other in London – can be described as the embodiment of a complex hybrid system of contemporary expressive pictorialism.”

The exhibition will be on display at the Trois Gallery at SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St., Jan. 29-Feb. 28. A reception for the artists will be held on Feb. 4, 6 p.m. Opening remarks will be offered by Lia Chavez. The event and exhibition are free and open to the public.

AXIOM is proud to present its next exhibition, ‘RIDERS on the TRAIN’ curated by Nance Davies, opening Tuesday, November 10, 2009 and running through Saturday, December 19th, with a Reception on November 13th from 6-9pm. An accompanying website can be found at www.axiomart.org/riders.

‘RIDERS on the TRAIN’ is an interdisciplinary art exhibition exploring new relationships between artist, audience, site, and context. Drawn from an international call for submissions, these artists and writers explore ‘the private within the public’ experience of mass-transit in Sweden, Australia, South Africa, India, Switzerland, NYC, London, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Mexico City, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, LA, DC, Portland, and Boston. The poetics of acceleration, compression, fragmentation and sensory immersion are explored as the artists record, collaborate, and devise small scale tactical interventions – juxtaposing high with low technology. ‘Riding Artists’ sample their ‘ride’ and generate an aggregate description of the mass-transit experience through a diversity of lenses and media including video, sound art, photography, web-based interactivity, performance, installation and writing.

SUMARRIA LUNN presents an exhibition in association with the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture (MF), and with the support of Sotheby’s, showcasing some of the most notable figures in the modern and contemporary art scene. The show will have over 70 pieces of exceptional artwork, including works by Paula Rego, Sarah Lucas, Howard Hodgkin and Michael Craig-Martin.

Does all art share a link with its creative sibling literature? An artwork cannot help but provide to some extent a record of the process of its creation, of the artist’s state of mind, and of the wider context of his or her time. These elements are what we might associate with non fiction- factual accounts of process, contemporary culture and events. Conversely artistic intention is a subjective phenomenon, one that we can associate with fiction. The proportionate mixture of these kinds of narrative vary greatly from one artwork to the next, but what can be said with some assurance is that unlike literature these stories must be discovered and explored; they are not as immediately obvious and definite as in text. Whether incidental, intentional or both, it is the stories the artworks tell that unify them.

This exhibition brings together a diverse collection of work from a wide range of artists. In curating this show we are proud to support such a worthy cause. The MF, a registered charity established in 1985, is dedicated to the treatment of torture survivors and organised violence. Sadly, torture is a reality in many countries around the world, and survivors will endure lasting effects for the rest of their lives. For those who have been subjected to all the brutality which that entails, fleeing into exile is often the only chance they have to save their lives. The MF is a UK charity that cares for these men, women and children and helps them rebuild their future, providing them with the specialist care they desperately need. The MF offers medical consultation, examination and forensic documentation of injuries, psychological treatment and support, and practical help. Central to the charity’s vision are its efforts to educate the public and decision makers about torture and its consequences, while advocacy work strives to ensure that the UK honours its international obligations towards survivors of torture.

THE PRAGUE CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVAL TINA B. STARTS ON 8 October 2009

FESTIVAL TINA B. – 8 October – 25 October 2009
V.I.P. WEEK – 8 October – 12 October 2009  –  A week of special events and performances.

The new era of contemporary art begins...
For a period of three weeks (8 – 25 October) in October, Prague will become the mecca of contemporary art again. The TINA B. Contemporary Art Festival is being held for its fourth year, this time wrapped in yellow. The key theme of this year’s TINA B. Festival is defined by the phrase ‘New Era’.

The organisers are thus shifting attention towards the new outlooks of contemporary art. This curatorial concept is underscored by the TINA B. Festival’s resolve to explore the relationship and links between new, experimental forms of artistic expression and wider cultural and social aspects and contexts.
Where is contemporary art headed? What thematic contexts are intrinsic to it? And what are its newest forms, shapes and colours?

TINA B. is trying to present the widest possible look inside the progressive world of visual art today, where an idea born a minute ago is already passé.

We bring the work of fifty artists from every corner of the planet to Prague. Therefore the festival is a unique opportunity – not just for artists and lovers of art, but across the art spectrum – to meet and learn and to exchange opinions and experiences.

The festival is preparing seven curatorial projects right in the pulsating historical centre of Prague in extraordinary venues. This year’s main theme puts an even greater focus on the new media, digital technology, video, and installations, and it is offering numerous performances.

Parallel Worlds: Fleeting Realities
Detournement Venise collateral exhibition of the 53rd Venice Biennale of Visual Arts

Curated by Dovrat ana Meron

October 1 – 27, 2009
Private View: October 1, 2009, 6-8pm

Scalamata Gallery
Cannaregio 1235
Ghetto Vecchio
Venice, Italy

To address the apparent dichotomy of reality for a different and multifaceted perception of our lived experience: This is what the 17 artists participating in Parallel World: Fleeting Realities propose.

In the vast range of topics covered by various artists, contradiction is one of the topics that most characterizes their work. Though embracing very different forms of artistic expression – switching from painting to installation, from performance to video art-we can find in this topic a solid common ground that unites them.

From that premise begins a survey on the elusive realities surrounding us which are caught to be fixed on matter to allow us to reflect on the “rift between opposite positions”. One wonders then between what is known and what is not, between cerebral and sensual, between word and anti-word, between the attractive and the repulsive pursuing the inquiry on the meaning of the ascent and descent of man and his relation between codes and symbols, the boundary between a dream of veiled modern mysticism as opposed to the experience of the ordinary which is only apparently trivial.

The artists of Fleeting Realities while taking us in the territory of opposites seem interested in widening the rift created between the elements and antithetical feelings and by doing so they seem willing to suggest that the opposites, in reality are merely shades of the same idea.

Exhibiting artists include: Alberto Graziani, Aya Chowers, Birgit Ramsauer, Carmela Weiss, Chen Shapira, Dante Maffei, David Behar Perahia, Eiva Lilja, Fabrizio Cotognini, Kaisu Koivisto, Lia Chavez, Michael Basov, Patrick Corrado, Regine Freise, Richard Schofild, Roma Pas, Sergio Trevisan, and Valter Luca Signorile.

Ongoing exhibition and publication

I have contributed a written piece to the Virtual Mercury House ‘Save the Poetry’ collateral event of the 53rd Venice Biennale. It’s a fun project curated by Caterina Davinio in which ‘planetary and interplanetary events online’ are hosted in cyberspace venues such as Facebook and Second Life. The poem (based on a 140 character 'Twitter structure') will be published in a book dedicated to the virtual events in the framework of the 53rd Venice Biennale later in 2010.

I will be showing new video work in Finland in September at the 4th Pirkanmaa Triennial in a programme entitled, The Truth

Pispala Cultural Association welcomes you to the Exhibition Opening of
“Truth” at the 4th Pirkanmaa Triennial this coming week.

OPENING 11.9.2009 at 6.00 p.m. The opening is free and open to all.
Pispala Contemporary Centre a.k.a. Hirvitalo
Hirvikatu 10
Tampere

The Exhibition will run 11.9 – 4.10

Exhibition Curator: Markus Petz

“Truth” is the name of the current exhibition now on at the Pispala
Contemporary Center, in Pispala opposite the library. It is being run as
part of a series of events under the theme, Organizing the Structure of
Conspiracy. In addition there will be Art Mondo on 22 September, in the
Pispala Contemporary Art Center and the same night Disco Occult in the
Vastavirta nightclub.

The events are part of the the 4th Pirkanmaa Triennial, which will see
events in many of our best art venues in Tampere. Truth showcases a range
of artistic views from across the world. There are anonymous contributions
that deal with the current political reality here in Finland as well as
artistic works from Africa, Asia, North America and other European
countries.

Works come from both artists and activists and range from installations to video pieces. There will be live webcasts, film screenings and paintings and other of visual pieces. The art seeks to question – as all art should - our place in the world. At the opening there will be live music from Frankie Shannon, the play Vaaliralli will be performed and Orgonisaatio will be placing Orgonite Healing Devices and explaining the philosophy of Wilhelm Reich and how it applies to us today.

The whole show can be contextualized as follows:

Contextualization

As long ago as 1651, in his book “Leviathan” the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes compared the complex structure of a modern country to that of a sea monster which had grown in size beyond the scope of human understanding. Now in the fourth century after the release of Hobbes’ book, the monster has grown even more in size and complexity. Bigger than ever before! For many, it is difficult to see oneself as a part of this huge creature. While people are trying to get a grip of its complexity, different kinds of theories are born – including those of conspiracies.

The conspiracy theories that can’t be proven either right or wrong can become prophecies of their time. There’s no hereafter or apocalypse that would prove their existence – or thereby non-existence. Thus contemporary “modern” societies have also the official media-religion with its own prophecies. People who are creating the alternative theories are the heretics that challenge these “officially approved” prophecies.

In ancient Greece, the proverb thi seauton – know thyself was scribed above the door to the Temple of Apollo, inside of which the famous Delfi oracle gave prophecies to people seeking wisdom and answers.

The modern day Hero, Neo of the movie Matrix encounters the same proverb in Latin when consulting the Oracle guide in the tale. This phrase can therefore be understood as counsel for those trying to understand prophecies – for true understanding of wisdom given from outside, we should first look into ourselves. Perhaps after that we can decide which
prophesies we take for the truth?

Visual Deflections featuring Pipilotti Rist

Curated by Eleanor Lawler and Katherine Nolan
Corbet Place: Sat 29th August 2009, 6.30pm till late

Corbet Place in the Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane in London

Pipilotti Rist’s pioneering video work has been inspirational for a generation of emerging artists. This event will screen a selection of these artists alongside Rist’s (Absolutions) Pipilotti’s Mistakes. Her influence is reflected in the concept of Visual Deflections, a homage to her use of disjuncture and distortion

The idea of Visual Deflections infers the interruption of the image through distortions of time, movement, light and space. It may also suggest a manipulation of assumptions and identifications that reverberate between the spectator and screen

The works will be shown as a screening from 6.30 Sat night and video installation will continue until Sun 11pm. The venue, Corbet Place, is part of the Old Truman Brewery at the heart of Shoreditch’s vibrant creative scene. The brickwork of the club provides a stripped back aesthetic for the screening, which will be followed by music curated by Back to the Wood.

Artists: Pipilotti Rist, Clint Enns, Ted Sonnenschein, Tessa Garland, Katherine Nolan, Eleanor Lawler, Jonathan Gilhooly, Jan Hakon Erichsen, Ciara Scanlan, Victoria Melody, Anders Weberg, Theo Tagholm, Lisa Flynn, Hillary Williams, Mathew Guillford, Alan Magee, Jeremy Newman, Saskia Vermeulen, Angelo Picozzi, Sarah Breen, Ella Bertilsson, Lia Chavez.
